Letter to NC Legislature on Senator Rand's Required Community Service for Graduation of College

Dear Ms. Kinnard,
Thank you for your service to Person County. Thank you for giving the avenue of communication to your constituents. I am writing to discuss the bill that Senator Rand is trying to push through the NC Senate about requiring students to have *20 hours of community service per semester* before they can receive their bachelor's degree. I think this bill is disgusting. Forced Servitude should not be allowed to be pushed through the Senate of North Carolina. Community Service is given to criminals in leiu of jail time. Why are we trying to treat our future college graduates like criminals? 20 hours a semster equals up to 160 hours of community service for a 4 year college term. I hope you do not support this initiative of forced servitude, because requiring people to do community service for trying to educate themselves is appalling. The lack of foresight in regards to lower college attendance in North Carolina based on peoples unwillingness to send their children to colleges who force children to work, is just a generalization of the negligence that this bill brings forth. If this bill would pass, I would definitely send my child to any college that does not require community service to receive his bachelor's degree. The fact is that required equals forced, and community service is work. We should not be forcing our children to do work, no matter what that work may be. I agree there is a problem growing in our youth in focus and deliquency, but we should not be forcing college students to address this issue. Mentoring children is a definite positive for our society, but forcing people to do it should not be an option. Being a good steward to the public in general should be something that someone has the freedom to chose. Requiring community service without financial compensation should not be considered. Your stewardship to the community is rewarded monetarily, and you are not forced into your position. I think this bill directly violates a person's freedom to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Thanks for your time.
